AAA, or the American Automobile Association, began in 1902 in response to the need for better roads and routes in the early days of the automobile. Before GPS and smartphones, AAA was the place you went to get customized maps and information called TripTiks before you set out on a road trip. While the TripTik service is still available, although not as popular, AAA has added other services over the years for auto owners such as towing and roadside assistance, insurance and road travel discounts. With 51 locations across the country and over 51 million members, AAA is highly regarded as being experts in road travel. Each year AAS compiles lists of the “best” vehicles in a number of categories, this year, two Toyotas were named to their “Best for Commuters” list.

With more than 86 percent of Americans depending on their personal vehicle to get them back and forth to work each day, fuel efficiency and comfort are important. Even with gas prices higher than they have ever been, there has not been a huge shift in commuters choosing public transportation. With the average drive to work being around 30 minutes, without traffic, coordinating and allowing extra time to use public transportation is just not feasible for many people. This also means that most people are spending 5 to 6 hours a more a week in their vehicle. With gas prices hovering around $3.50 nationwide, if you have a low efficiency vehicle, you could actually be taking a pay cut driving to work every day. The solution for commuters is finding a vehicle that provides both comfort and fuel-efficiency, but is still enjoyable to drive. Toyota is known for their fuel-efficiency and reliability and AAA agreed by naming the Prius and Highlander as two of the best choices for commuters.
AAA named the Prius to the list for its extremely high fuel-efficiency provided by its advanced hybrid technology. The Prius uses regenerative braking to charge the electric
power system, and the stop and go driving of city traffic actually becomes a benefit. It keeps the system charged and allows the vehicle to function on electric power longer, saving more fuel. The Prius is also loaded with standard features such as Bluetooth, cruise control and full power features that make it a very comfortable vehicle to drive. The Highlander was chosen not only for its efficiency and comfort but for its spacious interior as well. AAA found the Highlander very maneuverable for its size, which helps make it easy to drive in city traffic and park in crowded lots. The Highlander, also loaded with standard features, eliminates the need for two vehicles in the family, one for fuel-efficiency and one with room for the family and cargo.
